It was mentioned on GitHub, but there are still no means for doing it. Now that there is Lua, it could probably be employed to decide which highlighting to use.

It's now possible to specify background per cell for a Lua column, example is in that GitHub issue. Will be included in v0.15.

I need to get a grip on this lua column concept, and I will gladly wait for the v0.15 to drop to add this feature, thank you for the update!
